We enjoyed the food and the lights. The atmosphere is cozy which makes for a good evening. We went on Thursday night and their web site says live Jazz on Tuesdays and Fridays. So we missed the live music however friends have told me the music is good.

Our daughter and son-in-law adopted Lucy six weeks ago. So this is Lucy's first Christmas with her new family. Lucy was comfortable with the package wrapping and all the excitement as we opened presents.

Our cats, Click & Clack, were not pleased that Lucy joined us for Christmas. As you can see they found the highest place in our condo.

This year we choose an electronic Christmas Tree. We placed a monitor on a stand and present a slide show of the 65 trees from the Festival of Trees.

Connie was exhausted by the time I took the 65th photo.

Our kids are grown so we don't expect to many complaints.

The photo on the right is my favorite tree from the Festival of Trees. It is my favorite not only because it was sponsored by Budweiser but because of the color choices.

We feel the idea saves on space and we don't have to store the decorations.

The Historic West End is next to Falls Park on the Reedy River. It is also on South Main Street a short distance from where our condo is. The West End is the home to several great restaurants and some outstanding art galleries.

As these photos show we had ice in Greenville Wednesday night. These photos were taken on Thursday. The walk to work was a little difficult but the scenery was outstanding.

The newspaper said 200,000+ homes lost their power. Several friends shared stories about lost power, long lines in restaurants, trees in the road, and commute difficulties. Fortunately we experienced none of these problems. I contribute our good luck in part to living downtown.

This is a photo showing a small portion of the mural at a restaurant called Cazbah. It is a tapas and wine bar which is great fun. In fact the larger your group the more fun the experience. As a tapas bar only appetizers are served. As a result you get to try and share several different dishes.

My walk to work has been pleasant lately. The fall colors and the cool weather have been nice. You can tell Winter is just around the corner.

Living and working downtown presents the opportunity to walk. Each day I get to stroll though Falls Park and listen to the Reedy River. It is a great way to begin and end the work day.

It was a rainy night on Main Street in Greenville when this photo was taken. As pretty as this photo is it does not do justice to seeing the lights in real life.

I went for a walk today to try and catch some fall colors. I was almost to late.

One of the great things about living downtown is that a planned short walk to the park often turns in to an all afternoon stroll throughout downtown.

We are very pleased with our plantation shutters we had built and installed by Hummingbird. Click Hummingbird Shutters for a link to their website. Given we live in a condo we are most pleased with how they fold when they open. This allows minium space to be used when the shutters and the doors are opened.

Charlie's Steak House

You have to be good to be in business since 1921. So we gave the restaurant a try and were very pleased. The steak was great and we plan to be back regularly.

We enjoyed our meal at Saffron's Sidewalk Cafe. Connie had a salmon sandwich which she said was great. I ate a hamburger and was very pleased. Saffron's is on the lower level of the West End Market in Greenville.

Stackable washer & dryer

The first purchase we made for our condo was a full size stackable washer and dryer. We can not imagine life without a full size laundry unit. At first we thought the stackable nature would be a pain however that has not been the case. In fact because we purchased the top of the line it has features which make our old washer dryer seem very out of date. For example the washer self adjust and never gets out of balance. Also both washer and dryer use the minimum amount of energy and water.

Try to imagine the installation of a full size stackable washer and dryer in the space shown. I measured and measured. Then I did the smart thing and paid to have Lowe's install it.

12 foot ceilings in our condo

You can see from the photo that we have a lot of room to hang art on the walls. That is way we plan to go to the "First Friday" tour of art galleries on November 4th. Their web site is: First Fridays Online

Our cats, Click and Clack, are enjoying the view from our condo. Yes, we named them after Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers, A.K.A. Tom and Ray Magliozzi. We are big fans of Car Talk on NPR. Given the World Series is underway we stopped by the Shoeless Joe Jackson Plaza to take a couple of photos. The plaza is at the intersection of South Main Street and Augusta Street in downtown Greenville. It is in Historic West End just outside of a great restaurant called Smoke on the River.

Joe Jackson is a Greenville native and is famous for his baseball accomplishments and infamous for being banned from baseball in the "Black Sox scandal". See the following web pages for more details.

The Westin Pointsett Hotel is the downtown Greenville landmark. We enjoy their resteraunt called Spoonbread. However, we enjoy their Lobby Piano Bar the most.

The photo to the right is of the Poinsett statue on Main Street. Joel Poinsett is famous for many things and had an illustrious political career. Click here for details.

However the fun thing is that he introduced the Poinsett plant to the United States.

Fall for Greenville

We cooked only one meal this weekend. Instead we just stepped out of our Condo and walked one block to Main Street to enjoy food prepared from 41 different restaurants. Our favorite Sunday was Larkin's on the River. Their web site is: Larkin's On The River

The crowds were huge on Saturday night at the Fall for Greenville festival. The scene shown in this photo stretched the full length of main street. The festival web page is Fall For Greenville

Great beach music was provided Thursday October 13th at the Peace Center pavilion. Several bands played and many danced. The concert was a fund raiser for the Red Cross. The idea was Nick Theodore's.

Paul Anka performed at the Peace Center on Tuesday October 11th. We had a great time as did all of those in the crowd. Paul worked the crowd and even invited photo's during the performance.

The ladies, in the crowd, acted as if they were 18 again. Every one was on the edge of their seat and often on their feet.

Tour of Hope

Lance Armstrong visited Greenville twice in one month. On October 5th Lance and others visited downtown Greenville as part of the "Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope Team". The event was held on Main street in front of the Peace Center. In addition to cyclists there were speeches and then live music. Main street was blocked off and inflatable toys for the kids were brought out.

On Sunday evening we ate at Wild Wings. As we waited for our meal a wedding couple were dropped off by a limo. The couple then joined their friends for a celebration at Wild Wings.

One of the best parts about Wild Wings is that they are open and serve drinks on Sunday.

Greenville Symphony

The Greenville Symphony had a fund raiser for the Red Cross this weekend. As a result we were able to support local Hurricane Relief efforts while enjoying a concert. The concert was held at the Peace Center for Performing Arts which is on Main Street and Broad. It was nice to just walk across the street from our condo. The Peace Center is one of the main reasons we moved downtown and we have not been disappointed. Our only problem is finding time to enjoy half of what is available.

We had a great meal, last Friday, at Bistro Europa. We sat at a table on the sidewalk and listened to Jazz being played across the street in the Hyatt Plaza. Each Friday evening Main Street Jazz is present.

You can see from the photo that there was a lot of activity on the street. Music, lots of people, wine, and a good meal! Life downtown in Greenville is great.

Liberty Bridge at night

We attended the Unity Festival at Falls Park on the Reedy this weekend. The music and dancing was great. There is always something happening downtown in Greenville. While at the festival I tried my hand at a night time photo of the Liberty Bridge. The Reedy river is in the foreground and you can just make out a couple enjoying the evening.

On Friday, the weekly Jazz on Main Street event was combined with a parade in honor of George Hincapie. When the speeches started the crowd was surprised with an appearance and comments from Lance Armstrong.

About 2,500 of us in attendance had a great time. There was an article in the Greenville News about the event called "Hometown gives Hincapie a hero's welcome, parade" .

Sculptures at Greenville Airport

I made a business trip this week to Chicago. Traveling from Greenville's Airport is a pleasure compared to airports in many other cities. It is a short 11 mile drive to the airport from downtown Greenville. Once at the airport the security lines are rarely a problem. I left home 90 minutes before the flight departed. This was plenty of time to make the drive, eat a hamburger, and take some photos of the sculptures at the Greenville Airport.

Full service gas station

Even though living downtown has cut our gas consumption significantly we still have to get gas on occasion. We looked around and found a full service gas station just a few blocks from Main Street. The service station is called Seymore's and has been in business for 60 years. It has been in the same family for that complete time. The founder's son waited on us.

The address is 98 Cleveland Street. It is at the intersetion of University Ridge and Cleveland. The name of the business if Syemore's Inc. The phone number is (864) 235-8962.

We had an outstanding dinner Thursday night at "The Wine Cafe at Northampton Wines". It definitely belongs in the fine dining category. The wine store is very impressing and received some of our money as well. They are just two blocks off of Main Street and an important location for those living downtown in Greenville. When living downtown in Greenville it is a short stroll to the Peace Center amphitheater where the City of Greenville presents bands weekly. The crowd enjoyed the band and the weather.

Falls Cottage

Falls Cottage is one of the great landmarks in downtown Greenville. My wife especially likes the restaurant. Falls Cottage has an outstanding view of Falls Park on the Reedy River.

Boxes in the kitchen

As in any move there is that timeframe when boxes are in the kitchen and you are not yet unpacked. During this time we have enjoyed eating out at several restaurants downtown in Greenville. However the three we have enjoyed the most are: Two Chefs to Go, Latitude, and Augusta Grill. Technically Augusta Grill is not downtown but it is close enough and good enough that I thought it should be mentioned. We also have eaten at Stick Fingers, Quiznos subs, and Senor wraps.

No more commute

One of the best parts of living downtown in Greenville has to be saying good bye to the daily commute. Compared to other cities Greenville has a short commute. However, I estimate that instead of commuting 40 to 60 minutes daily I will stroll to the office and back in about 20 minutes. My stroll my take a little longer if I linger at Port City Java, Joel's Java, or one of the restaurant's serving breakfast.

There are some who would want me to point out the benefits of not driving a car (i.e. gas savings and no emissions). There are others (my wife) who would want me to point out the health benefits of walking daily. However, what I like is more time to sleep in the morning and less stress from the drive.

People were out and enjoying Main Street in downtown Greenville on Sunday. Families with strollers were cooled by the tree lined street. We enjoyed stopping at "Port City Java" (#11 Main Street). Several people were working on their computers while drinking coffee or a smoothie.

Rainy day at Falls Park

It was rainy Friday and Saturday in Greenville. The good news was that the hot temperatures broke and the highs were only around 80. The humidity was still very high. I think that Greenville has two months which are a little hot, two months which are a little cold, and then six months of heaven.

The Falls Park at Reedy shown in the photo above has quickly become a favorite of many in Greenville. It is on main street, has a pedestrian walking bridge over the falls, host many events, and connects to a larger park called Cleveland Park. It is possible to go for a 5 mile hike or jog in green space while downtown in Greenville.

While taking this photo I saw a family out for a walk and several couples. It was raining but that did not keep people from enjoying themselves.

Poinsett Corners

Poinsett Corners is the condo complex we chose to purchase in. This complex proves the adage "location is everything". It is across the street from the Peace Center, one block off main street where all the great restaurants are, and a short stroll to Falls Park on the Reedy River.
